The Lamborghini 400 GT is a grand tourer produced between 1966 and 1968, succeeding the 350 GT. It featured a 4.0L V12 engine with 320 hp, allowing a top speed of around 155 mph (250 km/h). The car was available in two versions: the 400 GT Interim (essentially an upgraded 350 GT) and the 400 GT 2+2, which had a redesigned body by Carrozzeria Touring to accommodate rear seats. A total of 247 units were built, making it a rare and significant model in Lamborghini’s early history.

RM Sotheby’s - Tegernsee 2024 The Lamborghini 400 GT 2 2 offered here is noted by an accompanying copy of a factory-issued Certificate of Origin, dated 10 October 2014, to have been manufactured in September 1966, placing its build towards the start of the model’s short 1966 to 1968 production run. During that time, just 224 examples were constructed. Chassis 0670 left the Sant’Agata Bolognese factory finished in Grigio Medio over a Tabacco leather interior, a colour combination it retains today. While not much is known about the early years of this car, a copy of a state title from Virginia, USA reflects that it was owned in Charlottesville in the late-1980s before being exported to Frederica, Denmark in 1988. The car has since been registered in France, with the current custodian a frequent competitor in historic motorsport. Fittingly, when it came for the Lamborghini to be serviced in August 2022, they took the car to AGS Racing, the modern-day revival of the ex-Formula 1 team. An invoice (available to view on file) shows maintenance work, including a brake refresh, plus the fitment of a new exhaust and fuel pump, totalling €13,717. Tested in "Classic & Sportscar" July 1996 issue, pp. 3, 74-79 when located at Garage on the Green, London, England. In 1995 the car was acquired by the last owner, Mr Joost de Graaff, who owned an important collection of exclusive, classic motor cars. While the Lamborghini was in Mr de Graaff's care the engine was completely restored using all new components by Badsaddle Stables Ltd in Apethorpe, Cambridgeshire, UK, while the carburettors and distributors were overhauled by Lorenzini Autosports in Lisbon, Portugal. Attending to the brakes and other works were undertaken by Mr de Graaff's personal motor engineer, who maintained his cars in an exemplary manner. These pictures were taken on 16 Oct 1996 in Holland. Although the plates are still from England, the car has now a Dutch owner. Appeared in "Classic & Sports Car" February 2001 issue. On 11 Sept 2010 #0793 was offered at Bonhams Automobiles de Collection sale in Paris and sold for € 194,500 (US$ 208,873). "Over the course of the past 20 years '0793' has been driven approximately 12,000 kilometres and is described as in 'perfect' condition. We are advised that the smoke-free engine maintains regulation oil pressure and runs perfectly, while the transmission and brakes are said to be in similarly excellent condition. All panel gaps are 'good as new' and the door fit is superb for a 400GT. The paint, brightwork, rubbers are all in wonderful condition, and the leather, carpets and interior generally very good. New Michelin tyres were fitted to the restored Borrani wire wheels earlier this year. This exceptionally well cared-for early Lamborghini is offered with its original UK registration document in the name of John Henry Pinder, Netherlands registration papers, and a five-page article on this actual car published in Classic & Sports Car magazine (July 1996)." Offered again at Bonhams' Goodwood Festival of Speed Collector's Motor Cars and Automobilia auction on 24 June 2022. Dutch owned from October 1996 to September 2010

| | 0904 | 0839 | 1967 | Argento | Nero | 7285 PF 92 (F) | Flying Star II Never had a Dutch registration | Chassis Number: 0904 Engine Number: 0839 Exterior Color: Silver Interior Color: Black Year: 1966 Notes: Flying Star II by Touring. France. Chassis #0904 Engine #0839 Touring # TOURING'S LAST TRIP The Lamborghini Flying Star II by Peter Collins Design prototypes very rarely become available, but here is an opportunity to obtain a piece of Italian motoring history. So you thought razor-edge styling died with the Triumph Mayflower, did you? Look at this car and think again. Suddenly, some fifteen years after Coventry had had a try, Carrozzeria Touring took it upon themselves to update the theme and confect a one-off around a considerably more glamorous base, which was in this instance, from Sant'Agata. Carlo Anderloni's team called it the Lamborghini Flying Star II. It was not the first time that the name Flying Star had been used as it has historical precedent. The title appears to have embraced a number of different models. Touring, which was actually renamed 'Stabilimenta Turinga' during the war as Mussolini was anxious to de-Anglicise company names, had created several styles of bodywork over the years, notably on Alfa Romeo chassis. These included cabriolet-spiders, as they called drophead coupes, and light, two-door, four seater saloons. By 1930 Touring had established a good reputation for talented coachbuilding and at the Milan show of 1931 came up with yet another innovation: split, crossover and running-boards. Castagna was later to copy this idea for themselves, exhibiting a car with these features at the Villa d'Este, which wasn't considered to be very fair. The two cars were exhibited by Touring in 1931, an Alfa Romeo 1750 based car and the first Flying Star which was built on the chassis of an Isotta-Fraschini 8B. The latter was a spider two-seater with flowing wings and painted white. This theme was also adopted for a subsequent Alfa Romeo 6C-1750 and 175OGTC, OM 665, Fiat 522C, Lancia Dilambda and an Astura; all under the Flying Star formula. There may have been more models under 'Flying Star I' as described in Carlo Anderioni's book "Carrozzeria Touring" (Autoctitica). The story now shifts to the 1960s and Ferruccio Lamborghini, after allegedly being ignored at the Ferrari factory by Enzo, swears to build a far superior car to beat the Prancing Horse at its own game. The result of this was the Lamborghini 35OGT, the first production car to come out of Sant'Agata, utilising a 3.5-litre V12. Ferruccio was not entirely satisfied however, as he had set his sights on a 2+2 configuration, hence the next offering which was the 40OGT and 2+2 of which some 260 examples were built, the bodies being constructed by Carrozzeria Touring. By 1966, it had been decided to revive the name 'Flying Star' for the car and so the bodywork we see here was designed and built on a short-chassis Lamborghini 40OGT. In fact Touring hoped it would lead to a new production car, but this was not to be as the Islero was chosen instead, thus pointing the way to the demise of the famous coachbuilder. When the Lamborghini Flying Star II appeared at the 1966 Turin motor show, John Bolster was prompted to say in his Autosport show report that, "the razor edge is back", and that the style, "....runs riot on the front, sides and roof of the car". He also reckoned that it was, "an enormous machine for two people and their luggage". Flying Star II was then acquired by Jacques Quoirez, the brother French writer Francoise Sagan of 'Bonjour Tristesse' fame, and indeed the car did move to Paris for some years and still retains the original French registration plates from that period. With the Flying Star parked amongst other cars indoors, there are aspects of the design which look slightly ponderous, such as the 'roof to waist height' compared to I the waist to ground height', somehow the window height seems on first impression to be too low, but move the car out into more open surroundings and it all begins to make sense, in a '60s context. It is important to realise that the concept of a hatchback was 'new' as seen on cars like the Aston-Martin DB2/4 Mklll and to some extent, the Austin A40 and Hillman Imp. The hatch itself is just that, so low is it that the rearview mirror in the car is mounted on the dashboard. It is when the engine is fired up and the car is on the move that a complete transformation takes place. The 4-litre V12, which is actually numbered 301, putting it amongst the 3.5-litre series of engines, with four camshafts and six Weber 4ODCOEs - a classical Italian set-up for the period - sounds superb and pulls smoothly and strongly. Steering is by worm and roller, but is firm and accurate. The most striking aspect of the car is what it hasn't got - squeaks and rattles. Here we have a one-off supercar from the 1960s, which, when let out on to the streets of South West London is as taut as a contemporary vehicle and hardly more demanding, although the temptation to use the engine and gearbox and revel in the sensation they provide is enough to bring out a little of the wicked in any of us. Ciclet, the French Lamborghini importer, was responsible for much work being done on the car during its life, this included some rebuilding and a new interior. Sadly, as related earlier, Touring's hopes of Lamborghini taking the design up came to nothing and it remains an extremely interesting, if somewhat unusual, prototype. If this had become the Islero, where would the razor-edge revival have led? Text and photos courtesy of Note: The Flying Star II was shown at the 1966 Turin Motor Show. There was only one built by Touring and it presently resides in France. There are rumors of a copy by Signor Giordanengo of Puro Sangue. | ||||||

According to information provided by Olivier Nameche, the Belgian Lamborghini Club president and expert on the marque, this was sold new on 13 May 1967 by Pier Giorgio Zani, the dealer in Ravenna. The number of the Touring body is 23902. The car was finished in a sublime color combination of Grigio Argento (silver grey) with Tobacco leather as it still is today. After spending some time in Holland in the early 2000s, it was purchased in 2004 from a Belgian collector by its next owner, an important Belgian collector of Aston Martins and Porsches. The car was then in an original condition, but needing to be restored. Two years later, he decided to get the car comprehensively restored. The bodywork was redone at Touring, in Milan, as well as the interior, in its original tobacco leather. The Borrani wheels were also reconditioned, and the engine was overhauled at Mario Villa in Monza. It was then reassembled at Red Willow Racing's workshops in 2013. A photo folder comes with the car and testifies to the extent of this restoration work. In a sumptuous state today, the car has covered less than 1,000 km since. One of 247 constructed, registry records published on this car indicate it was completed at the factory finished in Blu Notte with a Tobacco interior. The registry further indicates this car was delivered to North America January 22, 1968, and sold to the first owner, Bob Estes. Robert “Bob” Estes, Los Angeles, California was a prominent car dealer, racing driver, team owner, and car collector. As owner/operator for a Lincoln-Mercury dealership in Inglewood, California, resources allowed him 13 entries in the Indianapolis 500 from 1948-1960, a Class C land speed record in 1952, AAA Midwest Sprint Car victories and other prominent racing events. In 1955, Estes expanded his dealership business to include imports, opening Precision Motor Cars and Estes-Zipper Porsche with Otto Zipper. Although it is not known how long Estes retained this Lamborghini, this car eventually came under the care of well-respected Brummen, Netherlands specialty dealers “The Gallery Aalderling”. In May 2008, the former owner purchased this car directly from The Gallery, retaining it as part of a static display until spring 2022. The door gaps and detailing are superb. For sale in Jan 2009 at Fantasy Junction in California, USA with 48,149 miles and an asking price of $175,000 US. "This particular example is a late production car that was originally supplied to Bob Estes, the contemporary West Coast Lamborghini distributor based in Southern California. It has been owned by the same collector since at least 1990, and during his ownership, it was fitted with a rebuilt non-matching engine (#40555 originally from Jarama GT #10152) sourced from Arizona (likely from Lamborghini engine Guru Bob Wallace, or GT Car Parts). In 2001, the car received an engine out service including the replacement of the right cylinder head gasket, engine compartment detail, fluid change, and brake system rebuild, including rebuilt calipers and new hoses. The interior has been trimmed in high quality, supple tan leather and wool carpets. The seats, door panels, and carpeting show very light signs of use, but this is only evident upon stringent inspection. The oil pressure gauge has been upgraded to a more reliable VDO unit, while the balance of the period correct Jaeger gauges remain, along with the factory wood steering wheel. The engine bay, while not detailed for show purposes, is dry and tidy and is evidence of the care and attention given to this example during the current ownership period. The underside, while not detailed, is exceptionally solid and straight. We stress this positive point, as quite often, especially with European delivery cars, 350 and 400 GTs are subject to corrosion. The car drives good as it looks with excellent power delivery, smooth transmission with good syncros, compliant suspension and competent braking." In August 2014 for sale at the Gallery Brummen in the Netherlands with 48,200 miles and an asking price of €449,500. April 2022 for sale at Collection by Vermant in Belgium with 48,900 miles and an asking price of €349,450. "The exterior is finished in a very nice shade of red, which is still in excellent shape. When continuing on the outside, we find a very nice set of Borrani wire wheels with the correct Borrani spinner fitted. The chromework on the car is still beautifully finished and has a nice shine throughout. When going to the back of the car, we can find the correct Ansa exhaust system. When continuing to look on the exterior of the car, we can find the badging of ‘Touring Superleggera’ indicate the design house of the car, Touring, and the Superleggera (superlight) stands for the building method of the bodywork, where some bodyparts were crafted from aluminium instead of steel. The interior is finished in the original colour of Senape (Mustard). The interior was most likely refinished when the car received its exterior restoration. Over the years, the leather has aged well and is showing a subtle but nice level of patina. The car is now wearing a wooden steering wheel with matching gear knob. The car is currently not equipped with its matching numbers engine. The original engine was removed due to a malfunction. However, the matching numbers engine and cilinder heads are still present and will be included in the sale, giving the future owner the opportunity to make the car “matching numbers” again." Offered with 48,938 miles at Bonhams' Autoworld sale on 13 May 2023 and sold for €223,925.62. Offered again with 48,968 miles at Artcurial's Sale Automobiles sur les Champs sale in Paris, France on 22 Oct 2023. Bonhams LOT 142 Originally Verde over Senape 1968 Lamborghini 400 GT 2+2 Coupé THE AUTOWORLD SALE 13 May 2023, 14:00 CEST Brussels, Autoworld Sold for €223,925.62 inc. premium Chassis number '1273' was built in January 1968 at the Lamborghini factory in Sant'Agata Bolognese, destined for the USA, and was originally supplied to Bob Estes, the West Coast Lamborghini distributor based in Southern California. The original colour combination was Verde (Green) with Senape (Mustard) interior. Not much is known about the car's early history; it is believed to have been owned by just one collector between 1990 and 2014, and during his ownership was fitted with a rebuilt type-correct engine. However, the matching-numbers engine ('1469') and cylinder heads remained with the car and will be included in the sale. A work of art in its own right, the 4.0-litre V12 engine is never short of power and delivers a glorious soundtrack. The interior is trimmed in high quality supple leather with woollen carpets, while the seats, door panels, and carpeting are in very good condition and have aged well, possessing a subtle but nice patina. The car is now equipped with a wood-rim steering wheel with matching gear knob. We are advised that the bodywork is in very good condition, with straight panels and good panel gaps. Applied at some time in the past, the red paintwork shows bright and is still in very good condition overall. The car rolls on a set of Borrani wire wheels, with the correct Borrani spinners, shod with older Pirelli tyres. The chromework is still beautifully finished and has a nice shine throughout. Around 2014 the Lamborghini returned to Europe and was bought by the current owner, who has used it sparingly. In general, this is a very nice car that has benefited from an older restoration, with a nice patina and a very strong driveline and mechanicals. Accompanying documentation includes the Lamborghini Certificate confirming build details; invoices for work carried out in 2017; a valuation report from 2016, an Original sales brochure; a copy of the old US Title and current Belgian registration documents. With only 224 built, this beautiful 400 GT 2+2 represents a wonderful opportunity to acquire a fine example of this rare and desirable early Lamborghini.

Originally Azzurro Fiat/Nero to V.P.M. (Voitures Paris Monceau) in Paris, France on 14 Nov 1967. RM Auction Cernobbio, May 2019 This 400 GT boasts a rather fascinating history as it remained in the hands of its first owner for an amazing 50 years. He purchased the 400 GT presented here new in December of 1967 following a visit to the Lamborghini factory in Sant’Agata Bolognese with his son, where they met with Ferruccio Lamborghini himself. Finished just how it appears today, in Azzurro Mettallizzato over a Nero interior, after completion chassis no. 01285 was subsequently shipped to the Netherlands to be delivered to its enthusiastic owner. Driven regularly over the next four years, the car accumulated nearly 50,000 km on its odometer. Serviced as necessary during this time in the Netherlands, the car made a trip back to the factory for a service in 1969, and the owner’s son travelled with it. He made the trip to work as an intern at Lamborghini in an effort to learn the car’s mechanical nuances, allowing him to work on his father’s car personally for any minor service work. In March of 1971, the owner moved to the South of France for his retirement and brought his 400 GT with him, re-registering it there and using it on occasion. Over the course of the next 25 years, the car largely remained in storage yet was started and driven up and down the road regularly to ensure it remained in running and driving condition. In May 2016, it was decided that the 400 GT would come out of storage and was returned to the Netherlands, where it was re-registered there and fully serviced upon its arrival, ensuring that it would be ready to drive and enjoy at a moment’s notice. Finally deciding to part with his Lamborghini in early 2017, the car was sold to its second owner, who has continued to preserve the car as one of the most compelling examples of its kind.
